Even though surfboards have been around for a while, these very fun wave riding boards are a combination of art, handcrafting, and very sophisticated fluid mechanics. Manufacturing a surfboard has been a hand art that was passed down from generation to generation. However, as technology in both materials and manufacturing processes advance, the way surfboards are made has been changing quite rapidly. To show an example of how they way surfboards manufacturing is changing, I found on the Internet a computer aided design of a surfboard. Computer aid design does not only allow new manufacturing techniques such as CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machining but it can also allow numerical simulations of fluid flow around the board to increase its performance on the water.
